Disney’s Love Bug was one of most popular family movies of the 1960s. It’s about Herbie, a self-confident Volkswagen Beetle who can’t ever be a racing car but becomes a champion anyhow. Driving a Volkswagen bug or van meant you were young, playful, eager to experience the world, and not like everyone else. Bugs are usually on flowers so you painted flowers on your bug.
The hippies who hung out in Haight-Ashbury in the 1960s were inspired by the different cultures, art and clothing of indigenous North American people. They admired their respect for nature. The tipi was a conical tent made of animal skins that was home to the nomadic tribes of North America’s Great Plains, who lived off the land, never taking more than they needed.
